There is a thing among nations called a ‘Traitor Mark’. It is a relatively medium sized mark in the shape of a ‘X’. Nations who have this mark mostly got it for falling in love with a human which is considered a crime amongst nations. Both 1p and 2p Nations can have it and the only known nation to have both is Denmark.

Who’s your favorite hetalia character? Perhaps you’re fond of Germany for his more “manly” and serious exterior, and gentle tendencies? Or maybe you consider yourself more of an America person? You can’t get enough of his intelligence and charming puppy dog like attitude? Or, maybe on the other end of the spectrum you love the Nordics? Fans of them seem to be rare, honestly, and it isn’t hard for me to see why. If I asked a general Nordics fan, say someone who loves Denmark, they might say they enjoy how funny they find his character. If you love Sweden, you might say you love his devotion to Finland. There, you see, is the downfall.
If you didn’t catch it, there’s a serious contrast between the reason given for loving APH Germany, and that for loving APH Sweden. While fans are able to appreciate the many layers to Germany’s personality, the Nordics are often thought of as one dimensional comic relief characters. Norway is a pissy jerk, Iceland is a hormonal teenager, Denmark is an annoying drunk, Sweden is in love with Finland and only Finland and his life is— you guessed it— Finland, and Finland is the childlike innocent character.
Looking at these popular characterizations, I start to wonder what went wrong. If it was their small amount of screentime and character depth, then why are there a few of us able to dive deeper in spite of that? Perhaps the over exaggerated accents and comedy in their episode? But no, that’s all we got of nearly every character, and most of them are presented fine by the fandom. Perhaps people don’t find them interesting enough, but I find that hard to believe. There are far more boring characters with less canon to go off than they have. Then what’s the problem?
Well, it’s what I like to call “The SuFin Phenomenon”.
